The injuries keep piling up for the Boston Red Sox.

Red Sox DH Masataka Yoshida will be placed on the injured list, manager Alex Cora said during his weekly appearance on WEEI’s Jones & Mego show.

Yoshida jammed his hand during an at-bat Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. The Red Sox lifted him in the sixth inning for pinch-hitter Rob Refsnyder.

Yoshida is scheduled to undergo an MRI today after seeing a hand specialist.

On the season, Yoshida is batting .275 with a .348 on-base percentage, .388 slugging percentage, .736 OPS, two home runs, three doubles, 11 RBIs, 12 runs, and six walks in 24 games played for the Red Sox.

Red Sox lead MLB with 16 IL stints through first month

Every MLB team is bound to go through injuries during the season. No team has quite had to deal with what the Red Sox have had to go through in 2024. In addition to Yoshida, they recently lost first baseman Triston Casas to injury, the fourth infielder to hit the injured list for Boston.

Last week, Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello headed to the 10-day IL. He joined pitchers Nick Pavetta and Garrett Whitlock are both on the 15-day IL.

Whitlock has a left oblique strain that caused him to exit last week’s outing against Cleveland after four innings. He allowed two runs and three hits.

Pivetta is the veteran of the Red Sox pitching rotation, and he turned in a pair of very strong starts to open the year, giving up just one total run over his 11 innings of work while striking out 13 batters in the process. After his latest outing against the Oakland Athletics, he felt some pain in his elbow, and he has been diagnosed with a right elbow flexor strain.

Third baseman Rafael Devers has been in and out of the lineup with shoulder and knee issues over the past several weeks, initially leaving an April 16 contest against the Guardians with knee discomfort. That comes on the heels of a shoulder issue that Devers was forced to deal with earlier in the month.

Outfielder Tyler O’Neill also missed a chunk of time for the Red Sox after a collision with Devers left him out of the lineup for an extended period.

Finally, shortstop Trevor Story was diagnosed with a fractured glenoid, signaling an end to his season. The 31-year-old recently underwent shoulder surgery in Los Angeles, according to an announcement by the team.

Despite all of the injuries, the Red Sox have managed to get off to a 17-13 start to the season. That puts them squarely in 3rd place in the American League East standings. Not where they want to be, but very impressive considering the physical obstacles that the team has faced through the first month of the year.
