Jared Goff has telling comment about his new contract

The Detroit Lions officially announced Jared Goff’s contract extension on Thursday, and the quarterback had a very telling comment about what he most valued as part of the deal.

Goff signed a huge deal that contains $170 million in guaranteed money. However, at a news conference Thursday, he admitted that the security that comes as part of the deal was more important to him.

“You can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot and that wasn’t really the thing that was ever something I was extremely concerned with,” Goff said. “It was the security and the no-trade clause and all that stuff, knowing that all that was in there, feeling secure and knowing that I can now put that behind me and be excited about what’s to come.”

In other words, Goff does not want to go through his Los Angeles Rams experience ever again. He was deeply bothered by how the Rams gave up on him and has not been shy about saying so. There is no reason to believe the Lions ever had any intention of giving up on him, but that extra layer of security clearly mattered to him a lot in negotiations.

Goff has revived his career in Detroit and become one of the NFC’s leading quarterbacks. He certainly responded well to the trade, even if he hated it, and will be getting paid huge money as a result.
